I was told that he bought it from a local police department when they switched over to 9MM. Any help in getting some more information on this gun would extremely grateful. Hi brewit56: It looks like a 2nd Model Double Action and your sn places it in the 1880-1884 time frame. The caliber is .38 S&W and just to make it clear, .38 Special is a different chambering and will not work in your revolver. It appears to be in very good condition. It's a wonderful heirloom piece.After 1957 S&W started stamping the model in that spot, too. So please open the cylinder and look on the crane, there could be both the model (Mod 10-3, for instance) and a serial number. If nothing there, then the gun is pre '57 and the serial should be on the frame under the butt. You may have to remove the grips to see it (1 screw, very simple).

He found it on his property several years ago wedged into a tree and the tree was actually growing around it. He saw the handle sticking out and chiseled it out.
